This
1950's update of one of the world's greatest love stories. The classic story of
"Romeo & Juliet" is transported to New York's Upper
West Side,
and the star-crossed lovers are caught between two rival gangs--the Puerto Rican
Sharks and the 'American' Jets.
Tony,
the former leader of the Jets, falls in love with maria, the sister of
the
leader of the Sharks. When the gangs arrange a "rumble", Maria pleads
with Tony to prevent the fighting, but violence nonetheless ensues and Tony's
romance with Maria is set on an inevitably fatal course.
Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of
the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
